      Currency and Taxation


    Romania's currency is the Leu (plural "Lei"). Notes are currently issued in the following amounts: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 lei (RON). Foreign currency may be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange offices. International airports and larger hotels also offer currency exchange services.     The Gross Domestic Product of Romania in 2003 was 328 trillion Romanian lei.
    Unique tax: 16%. Value Added Tax (VAT) is currently 19%.
    Major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard (EuroCard) and American Express are accepted in most large hotels, car rental companies and stores in the main cities.
